Lettre de Siberie este un eseu despre trecutul si prezentul Siberiei, realizat sub forma unui raport filmat. Sau, poate, pentru a imprumuta formula aplicata de Jean Vigo propriului sau film A propos de Nice (1930) (“un punct de vedere documentar”), as afirma ca e un eseu documentat filmic. Termenul capital e “eseu”, inteles in acelasi fel precum in literatura – un eseu in acelasi timp istoric si politic, scris de un poet. (Andre Bazin, Chris Marker, France-Observateur, Paris 1958)

Scrisoare from Moldova
Inspirata de filmul Scrisoare din Siberia realizat de Chris Marker aceasta calatorie in Moldova este narata prin intermediul unor scrisori de reflectie asupra colapsului Uniunii Sovietice, naturii contradictorii a puterii partidului communist aflat in 2009 inca la putere si asupra proximitatii incomode intre post-colonialism si nationalism.

Lettre de Siberie is the fourth of French filmmaker Chris Marker’s cinematic “personal essays”. Using a letter from Siberia as its launching pad, the film goes off quixotically in several different directions. Thus, it’s hard to categorize the film: a first documentary, it becomes a travelogue, then an animated cartoon, then a philosophical tract, and then?..Marker’s self-styled Intellectual Leftism is very much in the forefront through the film’s 60 minutes. Ironically, Lettre de Siberie was pulled from Czechoslovakia’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival, on the grounds that the Soviet Union hadn’t authorized a documentary on Siberia!  (by Hal Erickson / from allmovie)

Letter from Moldova
Inspired by Chris Marker’s Letter from Siberia, this journey to Moldova is narrated through ten letters that reflect on the collapse of the Soviet Union, the contradictory nature of the current power of the communist party, and the uneasy proximity between post-colonialism and nationalism.

„Ceea ce mă interesează este istoria, politica ocupând un loc important în preocupările mele doar în măsura în care reprezintă un semn lăsat de istorie asupra prezentului”i, declara Chris Marker în 2003 într-unul dintre foarte rarele sale interviuri (în jur de zece în aproape 60 de ani de carieră) acordat prin email jurnaliștilor Samuel Douhaire și Annick Rivoire de la publicaţia franceză „Libération”. Fără doar și poate, unul dintre cei mai mari cineaști pe care genul non-ficţional i-a cunoscut vreodată, Marker acoperă doar parţial, prin afirmaţia sa, adevărul propriului trecut artistic, oricum mult prea complex pentru a putea fi rezumat pe fugă, într-o propoziţie. Ce documentaire se présente comme un journal filmé, de septembre 2001, date à laquelle de drôles de matous au large sourire firent leurs apparitions sur les murs de la capitale française, jusqu’au moment de leur quasi-disparition en septembre 2003. Chris marker va suivre leur trace. Chats perchés prend également une autre direction, et devient un documentaire sur l’histoire en train de se faire, des élections présidentielles de 2002 à la guerre en Irak, en passant par les différentes manifestations, comme celles contre la réforme des retraites, ou le conflit des intermittents. Chris Marker a dit, dans un de ses rares entretiens, qu’il considère ce film comme un petit film d’atmosphère, simple et sans prétention.

Monsieur Chat is a character (a yellow grinning cat) which appeared on Paris walls at the beginning of the years 2000. Following its steps, Chris Marker is depicting the very recent french history (elections, demonstrations, state scandals etc.) through the perceptive eye of this strange graffiti…

The “Grinning Cat” as a form of cinematic essay it is both provocative and meditative. It makes keen observations and provides insightful commentary on the current state of political activism and also plays with our expectations about non-fiction film-making, inviting contemplation on the ambiguity of reading visual culture. The film’s structure feeds the viewer’s interest while challenging our ability to readily take what we see as “pure fact.” Like a piece o abstract art or thickly composed piece of literature the politically-oriented commentary deserves and requires a second, perhaps even a third, look. It’s film for reflection and contemplation, and perhaps even a call to action.
