in atentia arhitectilor, urbanistilor, artistilor, curatorilor si reprezentatilor altor domenii

In perioada 7-14 mai 2011, la Chisinau va avea loc atelierul ‘bucuresti 68 – zona de arta libera’ condus de Jarek SEDLAK, tinar arhitect ceh nascut in Brno. El a locuit in orasele Tampere, Finlanda si Amsterdam, Olanda.

Atelierul va fi condus in limba engleza. Traducerea in romana va fi asigurata partial.

CHIOSC is embodied in a small architectural unit entitled FLAT SPACE by Stefan RUSU, installed in the center of Chisinau. In view of the missing institutional support for contemporary artistic expression, CHIOSC appears as a reaction to the given context and as an alternative to the existing selfsufficient, highly ideologized system of cultural institutions. Following Deleuze’s logic of micro-dispositive (dispositif micrologique), the project fills one of the empty niches in Moldova’s contemporary culture.

The INTERVENTIONS3, artistic project dealing with public space took place in the city of Chişinău and its surroundings throughout August 2008, thus anticipating the CHIOȘC project. It gathered more than thirty participants from Moldova, Romania, Croatia, Germany and France who stayed in the city for a short term residency creating art works and reflecting over the processes producing Chisinau’s public space today, the city’s visual structure, the memory and experience of its inhabitants’ everyday life.

The project consisted of several phases: city walks, artists’ projects, public presentations and discussions, Ghidighici GRAFFITI session and opening to the public of ARThotel – a space for artistic production and exchange.

Their stay and the results of the project is documented in a 34 min. long film by Natasa BODROZIC and Vladimir US.

SAR: CITY, a lecture by studioBASAR (Alex AXINTE & Cristi BORCAN – http://studiobasar.ro)

The main subject of the lecture will be how we played the game of Search-and-Rescue in the last 4 years on the playgrounds of Bucharest. We borrowed the acronym SAR from the post-disaster intervention teams, and we choose a similar intervention strategy: precise and emergency actions that stabilize the situation on the short term and obtain a deal between the parts. SAR: CITY is a collection of several chapters of analysis and diagnosis, followed by some interventions of performance urbanism, installations developed in the conflict urban situations. The aim of these chapters is to go public and draw attention on marginal topics such as banality, improvisation or illegality as a part of the dynamic system of contemporary urban culture.

Research, public presentations and workshops on things that went wrong

In the book East Coast Europe, Berlin based architect and writer Markus Miessen notices that apart from economical and political differences, Europe is still divided by the symbolic border of possibilities. In fact, the more one moves East – the more is possible. At a time when Moldova is the strongest new candidate for membership of the EU, the research and workshop will focus on the alterplans, alterotopias (places built and shared with others), and the creativity that stems from an unplanned or even unsuccessfully planned environment.
If apparently ‘successful’ masterplans consume a place’s potential, is it the mistakes that create new possibilities? How the failure of one plan open the door for unimagined alternatives? We will look for errors, cracks, and loopholes in Chisinau built environment, and investigate their subversive and performative potential.

We would like to collect your suggestions and observations on the potentiality of the failures having a look at Chisinau as a place where two wrongs might actually make a right.

studioBASAR is an architectural studio established in 2006 by Alex Axinte and Cristi Borcan as a ’search and rescue’ team, acting as an agent of architectural observation and intervention. studioBASAR developed ’search and rescue’ (SAR) method, as a strategic survey turned into an action program, investigating the dynamics of the modern city. SAR: CITY is a collection of certain chapters of analysis and diagnosis, run and tested in the urban environment. The aim of these chapters is to go public and draw attention on marginal topics such as banality, improvisation or illegality as a part of the dynamic system of contemporary urban culture. studioBASAR was in 2009 part of the team of the Romanian Pavilion at the 53rd edition of the International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Finn WILLIAMS is an architect-turned-planner based in London. He worked for Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam and General Public Agency before setting up Common Office, and independent practice working with planning, politics, and the built environment. Recent projects have constructed critical alternatives to Warsaw’s unregulated outdoor advertising industry, the top-down London View Management Framework, and ambiguous UK Permitted Development legislation. Finn is a critic at architecture schools throughout London, gives talks across Europe, and contributes to a number of international publications. Finn sits on the Tower Hamlets Design Review Panel and is a trustee of the Friends of Arnold Circus. He is also an Urban Designer for Croydon Council.

Joanna WARSZA – director of staged situations, curator on the cusp of the performing and visual arts.

Ukrainian contemporary art today and its current development can be partially associated with self organized art practices, collectives and artists initiatives formed around 2004/2005, in the time of the Orange Revolution. Some of them were created in direct reaction to the orange movements, taking the street, mobilizing and agitating in favor of the causes they found important for the recovery of Ukrainian cultural and intellectual life, appropriating and deconstructing the language of the protests, in the same time acting as artists citizens, trying to take part in the public life…
